Glass & transparent materials

Define the feature.
Choose the route.

A surface groove, through-hole and enclosed channel can require very different processes. Start with the exact glass and geometry before choosing how the laser should interact with it.

Direct laser ablation

Material is removed during laser exposure. The trial must consider access to the feature, debris and cleaning, edge condition and any damage around the processed region.

The required depth, wall shape and surface quality belong in the brief. Neither a wavelength nor a pulse-duration label establishes the finished quality in advance.

Laser modification followed by etching

The laser modifies selected regions; a separate chemical etching step then removes those regions preferentially. Suitability depends on the material and the complete laser-and-etch process.

A laser source alone is not a complete etching line. Etching, cleaning, access to internal features and inspection must be included when defining the process scope.

Define a useful test

Inspect the function,
as well as the feature.

A clear microscope image can show local appearance. It cannot alone establish mechanical strength, leak-tightness or optical performance. Choose checks that reflect what the finished part needs to do.

Review PulseBrick technical specifications
  • Identify the manufacturer and grade, thickness, coatings, surface finish and any strengthening or residual stress.
  • Provide a dimensioned drawing, access constraints and the areas that must remain untouched.
  • Agree limits for chipping, taper, roughness, cracks or other damage, with an inspection method for each.
  • Include cleaning, any wet processing and the relevant functional tests in the scope.
